Rainy Day Recess

Rain, rain, go away, so we can go outside to play! Lately, all it seems to do is RAin:( We even had to miss an entire WEEK of school because of major flooding in our area. No worries, we have come up with lots to do inside.

We write "to do" lists...

We play games on the computer...

We play with magnets on the board...

Dear Rain,
Inside recess isn't that bad, but do us a favor...can you tell the sun we miss him? Thank you!
Love,
Mrs. Cooper's Class
P.S. My rain boots say hello!

Perfect Party!

Our class has earned our first "Perfect Party!" Every day that all of the students in our class are on time and present, we earn a letter to spell "Perfect Party!" Our school started this program to cut down on absenteeism and tardies. We get to choose our celebration after earning all of the letters. We chose to have....

SnOw CoNeS!! brrrr!

Everything turned blue! We were sooooo cold, that we even turned into the Statue of Liberty!

Keep up the great attendance!! I enjoy seeing everyone, everyday:)

Gotta Have Graphs

We just finished our unit on graphing! We had a lot of fun learning about bar graphs, Venn Diagrams, pictographs, charts and tables.

First, we learned how to create, organize, and display information in a bar graph. We worked in collaborative pairs to record data that we gathered.

Then we made a human graph. We learned that changing a graph's scale from 1 to 2 can change the length of the bars.

Our learning task was the best part! We had to pretend to be a data collector for a new juice company. We had to gather data from the customers to find out which flavor was their favorite. Then we needed to report the data to the new company by creating a bar graph and interpreting the information.

...but some of the juice was really strong and yucky! I guess cranberry juice is an acquired taste:)

Next, we learned about Venn Diagrams. We compared the number of siblings in our family...

We compared the attributes of shapes...

...and at times, we got so carried away that we started comparing ourselves.

For our culminating activity, we each got a bag of fruit loops and recorded the number of each color in a tally table. Then we had to create a pictograph and bar graph with the information. We surveyed the class to find out which was our favorite color fruit loop (green or red) and recorded the data in a Venn Diagram.

And of course Mrs. Cooper let us eat our data when we finished:)

Picture Perfect

The first week of school was fabulous! We have a wonderful class of 16 2nd graders. They sure picked up on the rules and procedures quickly!

Here is our class practicing what to do if they need help at the lunch table...

And here they are practicing a 3 "S" line (straight, single file, silent)...

I think this is going to be a great year!

The Final Product

Open House was a huge success! Thank you for taking time to come visit. I enjoyed meeting each and everyone of you and I look forward to seeing you again on the first day of school. We are going to have a great year!!

Here is the final product on Open House night.

This is our calendar math board where we will practice time, money, months of the year, days of the week, problem solving, place value, measuring, addition/subtraction and counting. I can't wait to get to the 100th day of school so we can celebrate!

This clothesline is hanging over my desk to remind me of all of the wonderful students I've had the past few years.

We will study a little bit of Georgia history this year. This is probably one of my favorite things to teach because Georgia is always on my mind.

And my second favorite place in our country... NY! I dedicated our reading corner to this fabulous city.

And to end with a quote from one of my favorite childhood authors...
"The classrooms are waiting for the day to begin, all dusted and polished and neat as a pin. "

See you on the first day of school!

Blank Slate

The floors are waxed, chairs are stacked, and it's time to get the classroom ready for a new year. I love this time of the school year because everything is fresh and new, like a blank slate. I feel like a painter... ready to unlock my creativity on a new white canvas.

Here are all of the boxes that I will be unpacking the next few days.

Check back soon to see how everything turns out.
